About Brian
My name is Brian Lloyd-Newberry. I've been building software for thirty years — startups, unicorns, large enterprises, billion-dollar acquisitions — and I spent almost 16 years at Cox Automotive, most recently leading their Product and Technology Innovation Lab, where I led the charge on bringing Generative and Agentic Intelligence into a large product development organization at enterprise scale.
In January 2026 I left to found Waking State Convergence, LLC — an Agentic Intelligence research, advisory, and coaching practice — and to write more deliberately about what I've found.
The current preoccupation: the gap between what humans mean and what computers can receive, and whether agentic AI finally closes it. The first answer is here.
I live in Atlanta, GA. Father, spouse, dog parent. I build things with Claude Code and think too much about category theory.
Experience
With over 30 years in software engineering, architecture, data, and AI, I've:
- Built and scaled systems across 2-3 person startups, rapidly growing unicorns, and large enterprises
- Led technology and architecture teams through billion-dollar acquisitions
- Led a Product and Technology Innovation Lab, driving the adoption of Generative and Agentic Intelligence across a major product development organization
- Shipped products powered by AI before most teams knew what to call it
- Mentored dozens of technologists and had the privilege of leading some of the best teams I could have hoped to work with
- Learned as much from the people I worked with as anything I built
Focus Areas
- Agentic Intelligence systems, architectures, and implementation at scale
- The gap between human meaning and machine representation
- Categorical and compositional approaches to software and AI
- Human-AI collaboration and the future of programming
- Advisory, research, and coaching for individuals and organizations through Waking State Convergence, LLC

Engage
If you're thinking about agentic AI for your organization — as a strategy, an implementation, or a research question — I'd like to hear about it. If you want to talk about what comes after the notation, I'm here for that too.
I'm open to:
- Advisory and consulting — helping individuals and organizations of all sizes navigate Agentic Intelligence adoption through Waking State Convergence, LLC
- Coaching — helping people of all walks of life integrate Agentic Intelligence thoughtfully, augmenting their judgment rather than replacing it
- Peer collaboration — working with other professionals in software, AI, change management, coaching, and adjacent fields who are thinking about the same transitions
- Speaking — on Agentic Intelligence, the future of software, categorical computing, and the gap between human meaning and machine representation
- Research collaboration — if you're working on something at the intersection of AI, programming languages, or human-computer interaction
- Conversation — if something here resonated and you want to continue it
